JEHOVAH-SABAOTH-"The Lord Of Hosts"
I Sam 1:3 Now this man would go up from his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD there.
''Lord of hosts.'' - in Hebrew "Jehovah Tsabaoth".
This is the first mention in Scripture of this great title.
It is used in the Bible 281 times, very frequently by the prophets Isaiah, Jermiah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.
It indicates God in His almighty power, who marshals all the resources of creation to accomplish His own glorious purposes.
In the Old Testament "hosts" may both to earthly armies (Exodus 12:41 And at the end of four hundred and thirty years, to the very day, all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. where the people of Israel coming our of Egypt are called "the Lord's armies" or hosts"), and to heavienly bodies (2 Kings 17:16 They forsook all the commandments of the LORD their God and made for themselves molten images, even two calves, and made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal.
Isaiah 34:4 And all the host of heaven will wear away, And the sky will be rolled up like a scroll; All their hosts will also wither away As a leaf withers from the vine, Or as one withers from the fig tree.
Isaiah 45:12 "It is I who made the earth, and created man upon it. I stretched out the heavens with My hands And I ordained all their host) and to angels ( Psalm 103:21 Bless the LORD, all you His hosts, You who serve Him, doing His will.
Psalm 148:2 Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts).
God, Jehovah of hosts, is the absolute ruler of all.
He has created the universe for His glory, and to fulfill His plans He exercises control over every kind of "host" whether earthly or heavenly ( Daniel 4:34,35 "But at the end of that period, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever; For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom endures from generation to generation. "All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, But He does according to His will in the host of heaven And among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can ward off His hand Or say to Him, 'What have You done?'
