And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

If Abraham had no child all he could do was leave his property to someone else.
Evidently he had been considering Eleazer for this.
God mace this promise of an heir when Abraham's wife was barren in any case past the age of childbearing (Heb11:11
It was not humanly possible for them to have children.
But God is able to make anything happen and human impossibilities are as nothing to Him (Gen 18:14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. This is the one of the key verses of the Bible. It is repeated in three books of the New Testament (Rom 4:3,9,22

God did not count Abraham righteous because of his piety or obedience to God's call, but because of his faith.
In himself Abraham was a sinner, as we all are.
Men cannot change themselves into holy people, cannot create for themselves a righteous nature, cannot stand before God by their good works (Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Jer 13:23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.
Rom 3:10-12 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. hey are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
But if we trust God and believe God's promises, God counts our faith as righteousness (Isa 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth hersel
ICor 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
2Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
God makes us fit to His presence, even as He did Abraham.
Abraham believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
